Have you ever needed to cash a check late at night? Really late? Late, as in after your 2nd shift work hours or super early in the morning?

Luckily, there are places that cash checks around the clock.

If you keep hours that are opposite of traditional working and living hours, you can find places to cash checks for you – even in the middle of the night.

Where to Cash Checks Around the Clock

You generally have three options for cashing checks around the clock. Grocery stores, check cashing stores and banks will likely be your best options.

Here is a list of places that will let you cash your checks any time of the day or night.

Note that many of these check-cashing places will charge you fees. We’re all about saving money, but sometimes you just can’t avoid paying a fee.

However, if you cash your check at some of these locations, you may be able to get out of paying the fee.

If that’s an option, we’ve mentioned it in the coordinating section.

Grocery Stores

There are only three grocery stores we found that are open 24 hours and offer check cashing services around the clock as well.

1. Walmart

You might know that many Walmart stores have check-cashing counters. However, some locations cash checks right at the registers too.

The cash registers are usually your best bet for cashing checks at Walmart during the overnight hours.

See if the money counter is open first, but if it isn’t, head over to a cash register and ask if they’ll cash your check.

The types of checks Walmart cashes include:

  • Money orders purchased at Walmart
  • Government checks
  • Payroll checks
  • 401k checks
  • Cashier’s checks
  • Insurance settlement checks

And potentially others. Note that Walmart won’t cash personal checks, however.

Check-cashing limits vary per Walmart locations. The overall Walmart rule is that they’ll cash checks up to $5,000. Some stores have a self-imposed lower limit, however.

Another thing to keep in mind is that cash registers don’t usually have thousands of dollars in them.

Therefore, when you’re cashing checks late at night, cashiers may not be able to accommodate a very large check.

Walmart charges $3 to cash checks up to $1,000. Checks that are over $1,000 cost $6 to cash.

Note: Not all Walmart locations are open 24 hours. Check with stores near you for hours of operation.

2. Tops Friendly Market

Tops Friendly Market has locations in New York, Vermont and Pennsylvania. Some, but not all, locations are open 24 hours.

Tops will typically only cash some payroll checks and some government checks.  They have a $500 check-cashing limit, and charge $1 per check cashed.

You’ll want to check with your local Tops location to get details on hours and fees.

3. WinCo Foods

WinCo Foods has stores located throughout the Western United States. They have store locations in states including:

Fees are $5 for checks up to $500, and $10 for checks between $501 and $1,000.

However, you can get reimbursed for that fee in certain cases when you shop at WinCo.

As you can see, not many grocery stores are open all night. Later on in the article, we’ll share about grocery stores that are open late at night.

Alternatives to Avoid Late Night Check Cashing

There are many places to cash checks late at night when need be, as listed above.

But what if you could avoid the need to cash checks altogether? Here are some options for doing so.

Sign Up for Direct Deposit Payroll

If you have your company give you your paycheck via Direct Deposit, you can avoid having to worry about finding a place that will cash your checks late at night.

Your paycheck goes automatically into your bank savings or checking account. Then you can simply go to a local ATM machine to get your money out.

Unsure about opening a bank account? Many banks offer totally free checking and savings accounts. And bank accounts with FDIC insurance ensure your money will never be lost due to bank error.

Get Paid in Cash

If you have to cash personal checks late at night, how about asking to get paid in cash? This is especially important if you’re selling items on Craigslist or a similar site.

That way you don’t run the risk of getting a bad check.

If you use one of these two alternative methods of getting paid, you can avoid the fees that come with cashing checks at the places above too.

Summary

Not everyone has the ability to go to the bank or a check-cashing store during normal daytime business hours. You might work a shift that doesn’t allow you to keep normal business banking hours.

Or, you may have other reasons why you can’t cash your check during the day. If you can’t get to stores or banks during normal business hours to cash a check, you do have options. Use the information above to find ways to cash checks during the hours that work for you.

Open an account at a bank with 24-hour ATM access in order to avoid paying check-cashing fees. Having your own bank account will surely make it easier to cash checks and/or pay bills.
